Don't Wait For Motivation: Create Your Own
True or false? To achieve your fitness goals, you have to first feel motivated? FALSE!
This is known as the motivation myth. Guys, motivation is not a feeling. If you are always waiting to feel that big dose of motivation, there is a good chance that you are always going to be waiting for inspiration to strike.
Motivation isn’t something you get— it’s something you create, on your own, by following a process that allows you to improve, day by day.
It’s time to stop waiting for the stars to align and start taking committed action!
People are always saying, I want to improve my health or run that upcoming race, but I haven’t found the motivation that I need to get me there yet. Or, maybe it’s better if I wait to start training because I need to get some other things lined up first.
What are you waiting for? Take action!
And I don’t mean any action. I mean committed action. Action consistent with value. If you value your health, then you need to set a goal of exercising at least four days each week. Your valued action is getting to the gym regardless of whether or not you are in the mood.
Focus on the process. Not the outcome.
Stop falling for the myth that you will only reach your goals if you find the right motivation. The truth is that there is no motivation that is bigger or stronger than the excuses created in your own head. There is always an excuse waiting in the wings.
In fact, you really don’t need motivation at all. You just need to commit to action in order to reach your intended goal. What's more is that you can even feel resistant to an action and still succeed. For example, you can hate going to the gym and still make it there daily. Honestly, there are times when I would rather watch hours of mindless television than chip away at another power endurance workout. But I’ve decided that my health is more important than my need for motivation.
It’s all about developing healthy habits little by little. By committing yourself to action and focusing on the process that allows you to reach your goal, after a bit it won’t seem like such an overwhelming task to keep going.
