I recently completed my annual physical exam with my internist who put me through the normal battery of tests and lab work. He also ordered a bone density scan as my last evaluation was in 2011 when I was diagnosed with osteopenia of the hip and lumbar spine. At age 63, I was expecting the results of those tests to come back with some things in need of attention.
I am happy to report that not only did all my results came back completely normal/above normal, but the bone density results were considered normal for age 30! Moreover, my bone density in the areas of osteopenia were not only normal but the scans showed an increase of 6.6% in the spine and 4.2% in the hip. I can only attribute these incredible stats to consistent strength training and nutrition coaching…all of which I’ve received through the incredible coaching and training at enduraLAB!
In 2011 when I was told that I had osteopenia, naturally I assumed that as I aged the condition would worsen. At that point I was determined to do everything I could to either slow the process or reverse it entirely. That same year my daughter challenged me to run a half marathon with her in the beautiful wine country of California. It had been close to 20 years since I’d run consistently, so I knew I needed lots of help get me back into running shape. I honestly doubted that I would be able to accomplish my goal, and even seriously considered backing out of the race. That was until I met Coach Lee who helped me realize my dream through proper training and nutrition counseling. Not only did I complete the half marathon, but I did it in a sub-2 hour time of 1:55!
Following that huge breakthrough, as an athlete over the age of 50, I felt confident in my ability to continue to improve! I’ve been an enduraLAB “junkie” since 2011 and my goal is to not only continue to improve on my own fitness goals, but to also encourage others to make fitness a priority in their lives, especially those over 50-60. It is never too late to pay attention to improving strength, balance, conditioning and flexibility! In fact, it is even more important as we age!
