Meet the Intern: Liz Baker

Where are you originally from? I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts. I was recruited by TCU to be part of the cross country and track team. Texas has always held a special place in my heart, and I was ready for warmer weather and a change in atmosphere.

Where do you attend school? What was your major? I’m a junior at TCU with a major in Health & Fitness.

Favorite charity? While in Fort Worth, I serve with the Frog it Forward initiative through TCU. I’ve volunteered at Stonegate Nursing Center, Cook Children’s Hospital, Tarrant Area Food Bank, Boys & Girls Club and the Fort Worth Animal Shelter. Over summer break, I volunteer for Back On My Feet in Boston. It’s a nation-wide organization that uses running and community to encourage and support homeless individuals on their way to independence. Participants commit to running three days per week at 5:30 a.m. After 30 days, those with 90 percent attendance can move on to phase two of the program called Next Steps, which provides educational support, job training and employment referrals including housing resources.

Current Netflix binge? I like to have the television on in the background, so I’ve run through all of the episodes of Friends, The Office, Stranger Things, Planet Earth and Evil Genius. I’m looking for another light network series if anyone has any suggestions.

Inspiration? My high school track coach, Coach Terri inspires me because she's been through a lot, but never lets those hardships get in her way. She was also always very supportive.

How do you plan to keep clients motivated? Constant positive reinforcement. They will get through the workout if they keep the right attitude.

How did you come across enduraLAB? Students at TCU were given a wide variety of possible internship possibilities to research. When I looked at the enduraLAB website, I was impressed at the programming offered and the focus on the whole body.

Best restaurant in Fort Worth? Torchy’s and Rodeo Goat

What workouts do you enjoy? Least favorite workouts? My favorites are running, biking, skiing and pick-up games like basketball or soccer. I’m not a big fan of stretching—I’m not flexible at all, so it’s more strenuous than I would like. I do like yoga, but again, it’s a lot of work for me because I’m so stiff.

Favorite workout song? Riding Solo by Jason Derulo

What are two things on your bucket list? I would like to run the Boston Marathon and travel to South Africa. I hope to be able to do something abroad that involves youth development in the field of health and fitness. I’ve come to discover that there are a lot of areas, both inside and outside of the United States, that lack functional knowledge of health and wellness, and I’d like to be able to be part of that education.

Did you know. Liz has sailed since she was eight-years-old! She loves it because she and her sister sailed together and they have been able to teach their parents these skills. In fact, her sister now lives in Australia and uses sailing as her occupation.
