Members of the Month - November
Brian Phillips is one of our November Members of the Month. Brian is a LAB favorite because of his spirit, never-ending dedication to fitness, and overall great personality. He has been a long-time member of the enduraLAB Run Group, and has come a long way from running no more than a 5K to completing multiple marathons. We will see you at the finish line Brian!
What are some of the things you love about the enduraLAB?
One of the things that I really love about the LAB is how it has grown and transitioned with its members. I love the eL FIT option, the challenging group runs, as well as the traditional classes being offered. The coaching has helped me to develop my passion for running. I also had my 14 year old son, Benton, work out with Coach Lee all summer, and as a result he added approximately ten pounds of lean muscle mass to his frame. My wife, Kelly, has also thrived under the guidance of LAB coaches. Since joining she has completed five marathons, the 100,000 monthly row challenge, and is constantly challenging herself. All this to say that enduraLAB is a place for everyone regardless of their size, shape, strength or speed.
How has enduraLAB helped you accomplish your goals?
When I joined the LAB, I was primarily running 5Ks because running any further just hurt too much. Coach Lee worked with me to develop the strength and mobility necessary to achieve my goal of running a marathon. Since then, I have run seven marathons: two that I didn’t finish due to injury, three that I had to run walk the last five or six miles, and two that I completed without incident. What makes this spotty history of success so special is that Coach Lee never gave up on me. I am in final preparations for the Nashville marathon on November 10, and I feel more ready for this race than I have previously. Of course I know that regardless of the outcome, Coach Lee will be there to encourage and help prepare me for the next race.
What makes enduraLAB different/special to you?
I have already mentioned the great training and encouragement that comes from the coaches. I think, however, that one should not under appreciate the encouragement that comes from having a strong community, and the contribution that can make to achieving fitness goals. The s+c classes have always had a encouraging vibe, but I really feel like the run group may be even closer and more encouraging. While running can be a very lonely activity, it is really uplifting to do speed workouts as a group. Witnessing others giving maximum effort is incredibly motivational. I love our running group!!
What are your keys to success?
- My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I feel His presence when things are going well, and even when they aren’t.
- Great coaching. Coach Lee and his team provide great coaching and encouragement.
- Family and community. I couldn’t do it without support from my loving family and community.
- Chipolte. Great food, great resource for energy, good people. You will see me at the 7th/University location around 11:30 a.m. either picking up/dining in four to five days a week.
Favorite Thanksgiving Day Food
Yams!!! Preferably with marshmallows, brown sugar and butter, if available.
Is there a lift that I am working on or want to set a new PR on?
I am working on a max body weight air squat!

November Member of the Month Kristin Buchanan never misses a morning class,and even admits to looking forward to seeing what's on the board. She and her husband make a great team, and as a new mom we know how hard it can be to maintain your fitness while caring for your family. Kristin may be quiet, but her fitness milestones speak volumes. Way to go!!
What brought you to enduraLAB?
I had a couple of friends, mainly Coach Miller, who kept raving about the gym. So Derek and I decided to try it out, and were hooked from that point forward.
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was a little intimidated. Almost everything was new: weights, cardio machines, pull ups, etc. Now I enjoy going each morning to see how Lee will change up the workouts. He makes each day a new challenge using everything that used to intimidate me.
What are your current goals at the LAB?
Maintain the shape I am in so I can eat dessert whenever I want, and not feel guilty.
What’s your favorite enduraLAB memory?
I can't say that I have just one favorite memory. But some of my favorite days are when you look at the board and say..."What did we do to deserve this torture?" And then kick some butt, get through it, and feel like you’ve really accomplished something.
What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting at enduraLAB?
Everyone at the LAB is super nice. All the coaches are super helpful. Most importantly, you will do great!
What is your favorite movement/lift? Least favorite?
My favorite workouts are anything cardio-related such as running, skiing, biking, box jumps, and even rowing (which is actually my least favorite cardio movement). My all time least favorite lift is the over-head squat--whyyy?
What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Sweet potato casserole or green bean casserole
